"What's Asthma All About?"
resulted from a convergence of expertise in medicine, instructional design, medical illustration, animation, and art design:
Rajeev Venkayya, M.D., Director
Dr. Venkayya is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California,
San Francisco, in the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. He is based at San
Francisco General Hospital, where he is the Director of the High-Risk Asthma Clinic and the
Co-Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. He performs research in asthma, and is funded
by the National Institutes of Health and the American Lung Association of California. Dr. Venkayya
has a longstanding interest in the ways that technology can improve the practice of medicine.
He is the founder of Neomedicus.
Carolyn Daher, Asthma Educator
Carolyn has a background in education and public health. She has spent the last several years
pursuing these interests including educational software design, bilingual and ESL teaching, literacy
research,and medical interpreting. Currently based at San Francisco General hospital, she helps
direct two diabetes research projects, and has helped create the Adult High-Risk Asthma Clinic.
She serves as the asthma educator for this program, assisting providers and patients to better
understand asthma and asthma management. She will enter the MPH program at Johns Hopkins University
this year.
Tami Tolpa, Medical Illustrator
Tami Tolpa is a medical and scientific illustrator in San Francisco, CA. She completed her MFA
degree in medical illustration at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. Since
relocating to the Bay Area in 1998, she has created medical artwork for numerous healthcare projects,
including scientific presentations, instructional websites, online CE courses, and multimedia pieces
like this one. In addition to a love of anatomy and illustration, she is especially interested
in the ways that new media can both enhance the learning experience and reach a larger audience.

Petros Papahadjapoulos, Flash Animator and Art Direction
Petro is a flash artist and art director. He has created works that extend from the movie industry
to online gaming. This is his first effort in field of medicine and patient education. Much of his
